Justin and his team came to my three plus acres of land that had not been mowed, trimmed, or had any branch removal in two months. The grass was up to our waists. I wouldn't take pictures because I didn't want my house to look so bad in any photos. In one day they brought my beautiful property back to me. They are still working on the gardens and grounds because they will not leave until everything is exceptional! That's the way they work. They take pride in their accomplishments (as they should) and my house will be ready for the market next week. Only because Cold Springs came quickly and got me out of a bind. I would recommend Justin and his crew for any lawn, landscaping, and even construction project. He starts next week removing a fence and deck, regrading and seeding. I can't wait to see it all done.

The recent winter storm laid down 12in+. I had originally tried to get on Cold Spring's snow plow route, but it was already fully booked. A few days after the storm, I reached out again after our oil truck wouldn't deliver despite the driveway being partially cleared (long inclined gravel driveway, it was slightly sketchy). Justin came by and plowed the next day, it was a huge improvement. There was a spot I had needed cleared that was missed on the first pass. Asked Justin to come back to clear the spot, which he did the first thing the next morning. While I felt $200 was a bit steep, it was well worth it to be able to have full access again. Thanks Justin-

Protect Your Landscape from Winter Water Damage

Addressing excess water before winter can help protect your landscape from seasonal damage. Standing water and oversaturated soil can freeze and expand, disturb plant roots, contribute to soil erosion, and create icy areas around walkways and other outdoor spaces. Correcting grading, runoff, or pooling problems in the fall helps direct water away from vulnerable areas and prepares your lawn, trees, shrubs, and planting beds for winter weather and healthier growth in the spring.

Why Water Collects on Your Property

Water problems can develop for several reasons. Natural low spots, compacted soil, changes in grading, improperly directed downspouts, and runoff from neighboring properties can all cause water to collect where it should not. Patios, driveways, walkways, additions, and other improvements may also change how rainwater moves across the property.

Because every landscape is different, identifying where the water originates—and where it can be safely directed—is an important first step toward correcting the problem.

A Thoughtful Approach to Water Management

A successful water-management plan should address the cause of the problem rather than simply moving water from one inconvenient location to another. Cold Spring Lawn & Landscape evaluates the property’s slope, soil conditions, low areas, downspouts, and natural flow patterns before recommending an approach.

Depending on the property, the work may involve collecting surface water, redirecting roof runoff, adjusting the grade, improving an eroded area, or combining several methods. The goal is to move excess water away efficiently while preserving the appearance and usefulness of the surrounding landscape.

Protect Your Lawn and Planting Beds

Too much water can be just as harmful to a landscape as too little. Constantly saturated soil limits the oxygen available to plant roots, weakens turf, and creates conditions that may contribute to root decline. Wet ground can also make routine mowing difficult and leave ruts, muddy patches, and thin grass behind.

Controlling excess moisture helps create healthier growing conditions for lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. It can also prevent mulch, topsoil, seed, and other landscape materials from washing away during heavy rain.

Help Prevent Erosion and Property Damage

Uncontrolled runoff can gradually carry soil away from slopes, planting beds, and lawn edges. Over time, small washouts may deepen, expose plant roots, undermine landscape borders, or deposit soil and mulch on patios and walkways.

Redirecting water before erosion becomes severe can help protect both planted areas and nearby hardscaping. It also reduces the need to repeatedly replace washed-out soil, mulch, stone, or grass seed after storms.

Direct Downspout Water Away from Problem Areas

A roof can collect a substantial amount of water during a rainstorm. When downspouts discharge too close to the house or into a low section of the yard, that concentrated flow may create puddles, erosion, soggy grass, or moisture concerns near the foundation.

Downspout extensions and underground piping can carry roof runoff to a more appropriate discharge area. The proper destination depends on the property’s grade, available space, and the location of walkways, planting beds, neighboring properties, and other landscape features.

Functional Improvements That Complement Your Landscape

Water-control features do not always need to look purely utilitarian. Where appropriate, elements such as dry creek beds, stone-lined channels, and carefully graded planting areas can become attractive parts of the landscape while helping guide runoff.

Cold Spring Lawn & Landscape considers both performance and appearance when planning improvements, helping the finished project blend naturally with the surrounding property.

When Should You Have the Property Evaluated?

The best time to observe a water problem is during or shortly after steady rainfall. Take note of where water enters the property, the direction it travels, how long puddles remain, and whether soil or mulch has shifted. Photographs or videos taken during a storm can also provide useful information during an evaluation.

You do not have to wait until standing water causes significant damage. Recurring wet spots, minor erosion, or repeated mulch washout may be early indications that runoff is not moving through the property properly.
